English Language Student Visa — New Zealand
Improve Your English. Study in New Zealand. Plan What Comes Next.
New Zealand offers international students the opportunity to study English in a fully immersive, English-speaking environment. But getting an offer of place from an education provider and getting an Immigration New Zealand student visa are two different things.
INZ will consider not only whether you have been accepted by a provider, but also why you want to study English in New Zealand, how the course fits your circumstances and future plans, whether your funds are credible, and whether you genuinely intend to study.
Who Can Apply?
To apply for an English Language Student Visa, you will generally need:
- An offer of place from an approved New Zealand education provider
- Sufficient funds for your tuition fees
- At least NZD $20,000 per year for living costs — or NZD $1,667 per month if studying for less than one year
- Evidence of how your studies and stay will be funded
- Acceptable health and character
- Appropriate medical and travel insurance
- A genuine and credible reason for studying English in New Zealand
You must also be able to leave New Zealand when required, including having funds or arrangements in place for outward travel.
Can You Work While Studying English?
Possibly — but work rights are not automatic. Eligible English language students may be permitted to work up to 25 hours per week while studying. Eligibility depends on factors including the length of your programme, your education provider, and in some cases your English language test results. Always check the work conditions stated on your student visa before starting any employment.
Your Funds Need to Make Sense
Having the required amount in a bank account does not guarantee that your financial evidence will satisfy INZ. INZ may look at:
- How long the funds have been held
- Where the money came from
- Large or irregular deposits — which may trigger a requirement to explain the genuine source
- Your sponsor or guarantor’s financial capacity
- Whether the money will genuinely be available to you
- How both tuition fees and living expenses will be covered
Bank statements used as primary evidence should generally show the previous three months of transaction history. Fixed-term deposits should generally have been held for at least three months.
Applying from Outside New Zealand?
Offshore applicants may be able to use INZ’s Approval in Principle (AIP) process. This allows INZ to assess the application before tuition fees are paid. If approved in principle, the required tuition payment evidence must be provided within the timeframe INZ specifies. INZ recommends applying approximately three months before your intended travel date, where possible.
The Important Question: Why New Zealand?
For many applicants, this is where the student visa application requires careful preparation. If you already have qualifications, employment experience, or access to English language study in your home country, INZ may consider the credibility of your proposed study and your genuine intentions.
Your application should be able to clearly answer: Why this English course? Why this provider? Why New Zealand? Why now? And what will you do after completing the programme?
