Suppose you are an international student who wants to embark upon an educational journey to study for a degree or higher-level qualification in New Zealand, which involves more than one course. In that case, the new Pathway Student Visa Pilot is for you.
The start point could even be an English language course culminating in a qualification at Levels 5 to 8 on the New Zealand Qualifications Framework (NZQF). However, you must complete the English Language programme of study within 20 weeks.
This student visa category allows students to apply for a single visa to cover up to three consecutive programmes of study, for up to 5 years, with one or more of the qualifying New Zealand education providers.
This visa category aims to provide peace of mind to international students and their parents and improve study experiences in New Zealand.
If you take an English language course, you can transfer to a year-long foundation programme, and then move onto a degree course, with all three courses included on one Pathway Student visa. Or if you’re completing secondary school studies in New Zealand, you could get one Pathway Student visa to cover the entire length of your studies, rather than reapply each year.
However, care must be taken to ensure that breaks between consecutive study programmes must not exceed 16 weeks, and applicants may be granted a student visa to undertake multiple short–term English language programmes of study for a maximum period of six months only.
You’ll need to meet the pre-requisites for any second and third courses on your study pathway to stay in New Zealand on a Pathway Student Visa. You may also be able to work while you study. Some courses allow you to work for up to 20 hours each week and full-time during scheduled breaks and/or the summer vacation period.
You can’t include your partner or dependent children in a student visa application, but they can apply for their own visas based on their relationship with you.
