New Zealand Pathway Student Visa

Planning to complete more than one programme in New Zealand? The Pathway Student Visa lets you cover up to three consecutive courses on a single visa — no reapplying between qualifications, no repeated costs, no uncertainty.

Who Is It For?

Students with a clear, multi-stage study plan. A typical pathway might be an English language course, followed by a diploma, then a degree. If you are enrolling in one course only, a standard Fee Paying Student Visa is the simpler choice.

What Changed in July 2026

Three improvements took effect on 20 July 2026:

• English language study extended — up to 30 weeks before your main qualification begins (previously 20 weeks)
• Foundation and vocational courses now included — NZQCF levels 1–4 are now eligible, covering foundation programmes and certificates
• Secondary students have more flexibility — you can change your tertiary discipline with provider approval, without reapplying for a new visa

Key Conditions

• Up to three consecutive programmes over a maximum of five years
• Breaks between courses: up to 16 weeks permitted
• Work rights: 25 hours per week during term; full-time during scheduled holidays
• Partners and dependents cannot be included on this visa

Financial Requirements

You must show evidence of at least NZD $20,000 per year in living costs, or provide an acceptable sponsor. A sponsor who agrees to cover your accommodation and living expenses is an alternative to personal funds.

How to Apply

Applications are online only. The visa fee is NZD $750. Apply at least three months before your course starts — 80% of applications are processed within eight weeks.

Note: This is a pilot programme. Your chosen institution must be on the approved provider list. We verify this before any application is prepared.
